What are demographics?

Demographics is the study of the characteristics of people or organizations within a defined geographical location. The more information collected, the more people and organizations can be segmented into smaller common groups with shared attributes.

Companies use demographic data to:

  • Understand which products and services different groups of customers want and can afford.
  • More precisely target marketing campaigns, thereby reducing the cost per lead or sale.
  • Track how society is changing and how they should adapt (often used in PEST analysis).
  • What is demographic data?

Here are some examples of demographic data and variables (sometimes called fields):

  • Age group
  • Gender
  • Race
  • Ethnicity
  • Location
  • Marital status
  • Education level
  • Occupation
  • Employment status
  • Income level

Traditionally, demographic data comes from a relatively narrow range of sources, like censuses, surveys and government records. In recent years, the depth of the demographic information collected on people has grown significantly because of the rise of search engines, social media platforms and specialist list providers.

For example, in addition to standard demographic data, Facebook now collects the following information on each user when it is volunteered:

  • Relationship status
  • School attended
  • Academic background
  • Job title
  • Industry worked in
  • Employer name
  • Net worth
  • Homeownership status
  • Household composition
  • Ages of children
  • Political affiliation
  • Entertainment preferences
  • Dietary preferences
  • Hobbies and interests
  • Favorite brands
  • Preferred retailers and e-tailers
  • Favorite sports teams
  • Web history
  • Technology used to go online

Why Does Every Business Need A Website?

These days, creating a website for your business is critical for all small business owners. Not only is it social proof that you have a real and searchable business, it also will help you to reach your target audience and build an online presence that attracts new customers. The web development team at Houston Small Business Marketing works with you a website design that helps you to position your business ahead of your competitors.

Forbes lists the top reasons every business needs a website below:

Credibility: One of the main reasons you should have a website for your business is to increase your organization’s credibility. Chances are there are several providers offering a similar service to yours. One way you can stand out is by having a website that looks good and clearly communicates quality information to your consumers.

Without a website, people may question your legitimacy as a business. Having a website is an opportunity to make a great first impression and give people comfort that you’re a real business.

Brand: Showcasing your brand to your prospective customers is one of the most important things that you can do. By clearly establishing who you are, what you represent and what you stand for, you increase the chances of your customers buying from you.

This is also something that can set you apart from your competitors. Without a website, it can be incredibly challenging to do this because people can’t easily find quality and reliable information on your business.

Leads: Perhaps one of the most intriguing reasons to have a website for your business is because it can increase your chances of getting leads.

Once people find you online, become interested in your product or service and want to know more, they’ll know how to contact you thanks to the information on your website, which gives you the opportunity to increase your sales. Even though websites have a cost, when used correctly, they have a positive ROI.

Organic Traffic: Once you’re online and have an SEO-optimized website, you have a chance of showing up in Google search results. This means that when people are searching for a product or service, there is a chance your website will show up in the results. This gives you the opportunity to drastically increase your customer base.

Saving You Time + Customer Service: Many businesses get calls from prospects or existing customers asking simple questions about location and hours of operation. If you miss a call, the customer is left unhappy. Calls can also distract your staff from focusing on the most important parts of your business. A website can reduce these calls and increase internal productivity. At the same time, it helps customers find useful information without needing to call, which ultimately provides an all-around better user experience.

Updates And Announcements: Since your website is on 24/7, it’s easy to post updates and announcements to your customers. It’s a way to keep them up to date on everything that you’re doing. When something is particularly relevant to them, it increases the chance of you being able to upsell them.

Digital Marketing: If you plan on leveraging digital marketing to increase your leads and grow your business, you’ll likely want to drive traffic to a website or landing page. To do this effectively, leverage historic traffic that has been going to your website so you can target the most qualified customers and get the best ROI on your ad spend. This is something that can’t be set up retroactively, so it is best to get your website running early even if you’re not planning on running ads at the moment.

Do I Have A Good Website Design?

Many business owners are unsure how to gauge the quality and effectiveness of their website. Sure it may look great, but is it user friendly? How much white space is on each page? Do you have unique and informative written content on each web page inside of the site? These are the things we will look at while auditing your site. Our team works with you to help you dominate your industry and outrank your competitors online.

Forbes shares some Key Steps To Building A Great Small Business Website below:

Obtain a good domain name

Your domain name, also known as your website address, is often the entry point to your site. It is important that it makes a good impression for usability purposes, as well as for search engine optimization (SEO).

Here are some tips for coming up with an optimal domain name:

  • Make it easy to spell. Try not to use slang, made up, or extremely esoteric words.
  • Keep it as short as possible. The shorter it is, the easier it is to remember and type correctly.

Use the proper domain extension. Try to always make it a .com domain name (as opposed to .net, .co, etc.) unless it is more appropriate to use another extension, such as .gov, .edu, or .org.

Avoid numbers and hyphens. They are hard to remember and less elegant and memorable than word-only domain names, and may be misunderstood when vocalizing the domain name.

Make the address broad to facilitate future growth. For example, Amazon.com is a much broader website address than BooksOnline.com and allows Amazon to sell pretty much every type of consumer good instead of books only, as was its original purpose.

Ensure it is memorable. With so many websites on the internet, it is important that your website name is catchy so people will remember how to access it in the future.

Research the domain name. Google it to see if a similar website address already exists online, and search on USPTO.gov to make sure it does not contain any registered trademarks.

Check if the price is right. Determine if you can purchase your desired website address at a reasonable price since most good domain names are taken and will need to be bought from the current owner.

Avoid nonsensical names. Choose a name that conveys a meaning so that users will know immediately what your business is. Yahoo and Google are catchy names, but they were very expensive to brand, and your small business may not have the same budget.

Create an SEO-friendly URL. When appropriate, try to come up with an SEO-friendly website address that includes keywords and geo-location; for example, “www.LasVegasElectrician.com.”

Purchase secure, scalable website hosting with good tech support

A website host (or sometimes referred to as a website hosting provider) is a company that offers the technology and services necessary for a website to be viewed on the internet. You connect your domain name to your hosting provider so that when users visit your website address, they are shown your website that you store on your hosting account.

Hosting services can cost anywhere between $2 to $100+ per month, depending on the kind of technology and support you choose. You can usually get a discount if you purchase a yearly plan as opposed to a monthly plan.

Here are some guidelines for choosing a good website hosting plan:

Although you can get a “shared server” hosting plan for as little as $2 per month, I would typically advise against this. Shared hosting means you are sharing a server and its resources with other customers, which can make the performance of your site suffer. Also, if one of the other websites on your shared server is hacked, it is possible for your website to also be infected.

A “dedicated server” hosting plan is the most expensive option—cost can range from around $100 to $2,000 per month—but it would make your website perform the most optimally. Having a dedicated server plan means that the physical server machine is entirely dedicated to your site; therefore, all the resources are yours and it is more secure than a shared hosting plan, as long as the technology is optimal. However, it is much more expensive than what most small businesses usually are willing to pay. Once you have a very high-performing site, this may be what you need, but it is overkill for most early stage and small businesses.

The compromise I typically recommend is a “virtual private server” (VPS) hosting plan which offers the best of both worlds. The cost ranges from around $20 to $50 per month, which is affordable for the hosting services you will receive. A VPS is one machine that is partitioned to act as multiple machines, which gives it a similar affordability to shared hosting, with similar security and performance potential as a dedicated server hosting plan.

Make sure your hosting company has phone and/or chat support so you can be helped quickly if you have a problem. Email support can often take too long and become frustrating when a problem needs to be resolved immediately. Phone support is best, but chatting works well, too.

There needs to be an easy to use server interface like cPanel to access your server. You do not want to have to use terminal commands to view your server contents and make changes, unless you can afford to hire a professional server administrator to help you.

Check to see what kind of server security is in place on the server you are considering. You will want to be able to access your server via Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP). There should be daily backups being made of your server contents. There should also be an easy, one or two-click method to install Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates. Make sure the hosting company performs regular security maintenance. Ideally your hosting company has a published security protocol you can review so you know how they keep their servers safe.

Prominently display a clear description of your business

It is important to let people know who you are and what you do right away so they don’t feel confused when they visit your small business website. Make sure your main homepage banner (also known as a “hero image”) and subsequent banners are visual representations of your services, and also that you have an introductory text blurb near the top of the page that describes who you are and what you do.

Additionally, make sure both your main and footer navigation menus have “About Us” page links easily accessible so people can click them and read more about your business in depth.

Create an interesting, memorable, and engaging website user interface

Make sure your small business website interface leaves a positive impression that drives results. You can do so by implementing the following suggestions:

  • Use beautiful graphics and easy-to-read fonts.
  • Make sure your graphics are compressed and optimized for fast loading. If your website is slow, search engines like Google will penalize your ranking.
  • Research the competition to see how they have designed and optimized their websites; implement similar components that will work for your small business website.
  • Research your target audience to see what they want from your site and make it easy for them to accomplish it.
  • Stay consistently on brand throughout your website design.
  • Design an intuitive navigation system which allows users to get to the pages they need quickly.
  • Publish easily accessible contact information.
  • Incorporate obvious call-to-actions (especially “buy now” buttons).

Create pages that are standard for small business websites, such as:

  • Home
  • About us
  • Products/Services (with descriptions and visually appealing images)
  • Sitemap (for SEO purposes)
  • Management team
  • Contact us
  • Terms of use (the online contract governing how users can use your site)
  • Privacy policy
  • Additional pages relevant to your specific small business

Optimize your small business website for search engines

SEO is a set of practices you apply to your website to ensure search engines index and rank your website appropriately and then show it to search engine users. Once your website is “crawled” by search engines, it competes with websites that have similar content. The better your website design and content is, the higher your site will show up on search engine result pages.

SEO mainly includes the following practices:

  • Keyword research and implementation
  • Optimal website code
  • Fast loading speed
  • Being secure and having an SSL certificate installed; SSL is the standard security technology that ensures data passed between web servers and browsers remains private
  • Having a mobile-friendly site
  • Existence of high-quality backlinks (links on external websites with related content) that lead to your site
  • Having lots of positive reviews online (Google, Yelp, Facebook, etc.)
  • Using internal links throughout your site to keep people clicking and reading
  • Using social media to link to your site (LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, etc.)

SEO is an extremely important ongoing process that can mean the difference between showing up on the first page of search engine results pages (resulting in large amounts of free traffic to your website) or page 300 (resulting in no traffic).

Does My Website Need To Be Updated?

In order to drive traffic to your website, it is critical that you keep your website up to date with a mobile friendly and responsive design. The team at Houston Small Business Marketing does more than web development, we ensure the pages on your website have fast load speeds with fresh updated content for the best user experience.

11 reasons to refresh your website design

A fully customized site redesign can be costly. So, take the time to determine whether you need a full redesign or just a few updates. Switching your WordPress.com website theme or adding plugins could be the solution.

  1. Your web pages load slowly: Every one-second delay in page load time can reduce customer satisfaction by 16 percent, says The Daily Egg. Test your speed using a free tool like PageSpeedInsights, which can reveal underlying design issues.
  2. You can’t perform site updates: Are you struggling to add new pages? Your search engine optimization (SEO) and site traffic could be suffering if your site lacks fresh content. Consider adopting a WordPress.com theme with page templates.
  3. Your design is not branded: Does your website design reflect your brand? Color, typography, logos, and images communicate a brand’s values and leave a lasting impression on visitors. Consider switching to a WordPress.com theme that is highly customizable, like Dara or Karuna.
  4. You have a high bounce rate: The majority of websites have a bounce rate between 26 percent and 70 percent, according to The Daily Egg. A high bounce rate, meaning above 40 percent, can indicate several site design issues, such as confusing navigation, low-quality content, or poor page load times. WordPress.com web analytics can help you pinpoint any issues.
  5. Your site is not optimized for mobile: Over half of global internet traffic now originates from a mobile device, per BroadbandSearch. Thus, a poor or non-existent mobile website could alienate a huge percentage of your visitors. A responsive WordPress.com theme can ensure your site scales seamlessly to smartphone screens.
  6. You have SEO issues: Major search engines use hundreds of factors to rank websites, including usability, content, and design. If you aren’t ranking for important search phrases, it may be time for changes. The WordPress.com SEO plugin can help identify design issues on this front.
  7. You don’t have a custom home page: Your home page is often website visitors’ first impression. A lackluster home page can decrease your crawl rate or the average number of pages that visitors view. Adopt a business theme with a stunning home page design, like Barnsbury or Maywood, to better engage your audience.
  8. You have poor conversion rates: Your website should offer many opportunities to convert visitors into leads, including the following:
  • Subscribing to emails
  • Filling out a contact form
  • Downloading an e-book

Low conversion rates can be a sign that a refresh is needed to strengthen your calls to action or add more conversion pathways.

  1. Your site is not secure: If your website isn’t secured with the HTTPs protocol, it may be harming your SEO. Learn more about HTTPS and SSL on WordPress.com websites.
  2. You need new functionality: Are you lacking important website functionality, like eCommerce checkout, online appointment scheduling, or custom web forms? A site redesign is an opportunity to add new features with WordPress.com plugins.
  3. You have confusing navigation: A high bounce rate or low crawl rate can be indicators that your navigation menu doesn’t make sense to your viewers. You may need to refresh your menu structure or add a mega menu.

How Often Do Websites Need Maintenance

Website maintenance plays a vital role in having a functioning and up-to-date site. There are many different areas that require attention in order to get the most out of your company’s website:

Security

When you think about the security of your website, not only are you trying to protect yourself from having your safety violated, you are also trying to ensure everyone who visits your website is safe. The last thing you want is for visitors who come to your website to worry about getting a virus or having their personal information stolen from them. Some websites will require visitors to input payment information, personal identification information, and other sensitive information. The more you expect the users on your site to share about themselves, the more important it will be to focus on maintaining a safe and secure website.

Content

As time goes on, your business will go through changes and evolve. You may offer new services, stop offering old services, or refocus the direction of your company entirely. This will require you to update and maintain the content that appears on your website in order to stay relevant and accurate. Additionally, you may find that the traffic that is directed to your website leads to specific questions or patterns. If you notice there is a lack of information covering aspects of your business, updating the content can help to represent yourself more clearly for online users.

It is also important to see how the information on your website is being seen by search engines. Our website maintenance services include auditing your website on a regular basis to ensure you do not have broken links or low-quality content that can affect your placement online.

Design

The design of your website will not require frequent major overhauls, however, as time goes on you will want to update your website to keep up with trends and establish a strong online presence. New software and tools are constantly being made in order to help streamline the performance of websites. Our web developers maintain your website and work with business owners to ensure their vision is becoming a reality.

Technical SEO

The point of Technical SEO is to make sure that search engines are able to properly find and navigate your website. You want to know that the information you have placed is being seen under the proper searches. Without this, it will be very difficult to be found by the users you are looking to attract.

How Often Does Your Website Need Maintenance?

Our team is dedicated to providing you with a website that is up-to-date and enhances the user experience. Routine maintenance is a critical component of web design. This is why maintenance costs have been accounted for in our comprehensive marketing services. We find that website updates and maintenance plans should be done on a monthly basis. Make sure you are attracting potential customers and not pushing them away with our web maintenance services.

Web Development Services in Houston

What is web development?

A web developer’s job is to create websites. While their primary role is to ensure the website is visually appealing and easy to navigate, many web developers are also responsible for the website’s performance and capacity.

Types of web developers

Web developers usually fall under one of three categories: back-end developers, front-end developers, and full-stack developers. Some web developers also work as webmasters. Let’s take a closer look at each of these roles.

  • Back-end web developers create the website’s structure, write code, and verify the code works. Their responsibilities also may include managing access points for others who need to manage a website’s content.
  • Front-end web developers work on the visual part of the website—the pages visitors see and interact with (also known as the user interface). They design the physical layout of each page, integrate graphics, and use HTML and JavaScript to enhance the site.
  • Full-stack developers do the work of both a back-end and front-end developer. These developers have the knowledge to build a complete website and may work for organizations that don’t have the budget for a large website team.
  • Webmasters are essentially website managers. Their primary responsibility is to keep the website updated, ensuring that the links and applications on each page work properly.

Web developer tasks and responsibilities

As a web developer, you could work for a company or agency, or as a freelancer taking on projects for individual clients. Your tasks will vary depending on your work situation, but day-to-day responsibilities might generally include:

  • Designing user interfaces and navigation menus
  • Writing and reviewing code for sites, typically HTML, XML, or JavaScript
  • Integrating multimedia content onto a site
  • Testing web applications
  • Troubleshooting problems with performance or user experience
  • Collaborating with designers, developers, and stakeholders

What Is a Front End Developer?

Front End Development Defined

Front-end development is the part of web development that codes and creates front-end elements of a website, which are features that are directly viewable and accessible by the end-user or client. Essentially, a front-end developer is responsible for everything you see and works to enhance the user experience to ensure it is seamless. They help create the overall design and aesthetic, in addition to debugging and using static code analysis.

Front End Developer Skills

Front end developers are responsible for implementing visual components on a website as well as interactive features like navigation, buttons, or anything that enhances overall usability. HTML, JavaScript, and CSS are often used to make sure the visual side (or client-side) of a site runs smoothly so that users can interact freely and comfortably with it . Although some front end developers handle web design, others work from a web designer’s mock-ups.

Some of the skills required for a front end developer job include:

  • A good grasp of front end programming languages
  • The ability to create a responsive design
  • A knowledge of testing and debugging
  • An understanding of front end development tools and features like automation, content management systems, version control systems, APIs, and frameworks.

What Is a Back End Developer?

Back End Development Defined

Back-end development is aptly named for web development that occurs at the back end of programs. In contrast to front-end development, which focuses on customer-facing products and programs, back-end development addresses server-side web application logic and integration. Back-end developers write code to help a database and application communicate. Essentially, a back-end developer handles what you don’t see; they are in charge of the back end of a website, which includes servers, databases, and applications.

Back End Developer Skills

Back-end developers are responsible for making web pages and applications work through back-end languages and frameworks such as Java or Ruby on Rails. They also monitor how the site is working and make changes and updates to improve the behind-the-scenes functionality.

Some of the skills required for back end developer jobs include:

  • Database management
  • Framework utilization
  • Programming
  • Knowledge of accessibility and security compliance

Below is a deeper look into how search engines work to rank websites:

How Search organizes information

Before you search, web crawlers gather information from across hundreds of billions of web pages and organize it in the Search index.

The fundamentals of Search

The crawling process begins with a list of web addresses from past crawls and sitemaps provided by website owners. As our crawlers visit these websites, they use links on those sites to discover other pages. The software pays special attention to new sites, changes to existing sites, and dead links. Computer programs determine which sites to crawl, how often and how many pages to fetch from each site.

We offer Search Console to give site owners granular choices about how Google crawls their site: they can provide detailed instructions about how to process pages on their sites, can request a recrawl or can opt-out of crawling altogether using a file called “robots.txt”. Google never accepts payment to crawl a site more frequently — we provide the same tools to all websites to ensure the best possible results for our users.

Finding information by crawling

The web is like an ever-growing library with billions of books and no central filing system. We use software known as web crawlers to discover publicly available web pages. Crawlers look at web pages and follow links on those pages, much like you would if you were browsing content on the web. They go from link to link and bring data about those web pages back to Google’s servers.

Organizing information by indexing

When crawlers find a webpage, our systems render the content of the page, just as a browser does. We take note of key signals — from keywords to website freshness — and we keep track of it all in the Search index.

The Google Search index contains hundreds of billions of web pages and is well over 100,000,000 gigabytes in size. It’s like the index in the back of a book — with an entry for every word seen on every webpage we index. When we index a webpage, we add it to the entries for all of the words it contains.

Organizing information by indexing

With the Knowledge Graph, we’re continuing to go beyond keyword matching to better understand the people, places, and things you care about. To do this, we not only organize information about web pages but other types of information too. Today, Google Search can help you search text from millions of books from major libraries, find travel times from your local public transit agency, or help you navigate data from public sources like the World Bank.

SEO checklist: How to improve your results

The good news about SEO planning is that what works for SEO also aligns with providing a positive user experience (UX) for people who visit your website. So, SEO-friendly changes equal a better site for the people you want to engage.

“SEO should be a consideration throughout every step of your website build and your marketing journey,” says Ade Lewis, Partnerships Director at Mailchimp. “It’s the number one way a consumer will find a small business.”

Review this checklist to learn about the changes and adjustments you can make to improve your SEO.

Feature relevant keywords. Keywords are words or phrases that people type into search engines to find something. All areas of your website—including page names, headlines, site copy, image captions, page descriptions, and URLs—need to include keywords in a natural way that doesn’t sound too forced.

Since people search with specific needs in mind, your keywords should be “long tail,” meaning descriptive and narrowly focused. For example, “wedding photography Newport RI” will work better than just “professional photography.” Specific keywords will bring in less traffic overall, but ranking for more detailed searches will result in a higher conversion rate.

  • Have a clean site structure. Make sure your website is organized in a way that makes it easy for users and search engines to travel through your site and find what they’re looking for. Internal links from one page to another within your site should provide content that educates your visitor, answers a question about what you offer, or engages them in some other valuable way. Internal links give Google more clues about what your website is about, so it can send relevant visitors your way.
  • Feature substantial content. Create website content that’s relevant to your top keywords and hefty enough to be valuable. While punchy, skimmable content is great, keep in mind that Google wants content that solves the search intent, so pages with fewer than 200 words will not be highly ranked. If you want to add meat to your copy, be sure each page solves a problem, answers a question, or moves a visitor forward in their journey through your site.
  • Use relevant title tags. A title tag or page tag is the “headline” for a page when it appears in search engine results pages (SERP). The words or phrases in your title tags should be specific and descriptive. Think, “Learn How to Paint Landscapes and Portraits” instead of “Painting Class.” Combining this with the meta description—a longer blurb in search results that says more about what your content provides—encourages users to click through to your website. Title tags also appear in your visitors’ web browser tabs and in social media when your content is shared. This is easy to do in Mailchimp’s website builder. Simply go to the page settings and edit the SEO title to create a title tag and the SEO description to write a meta description.
  • Add alt tags. An alt tag is a text description of an image. It serves 3 important purposes. Search engines can’t interpret images, so alt tags help them identify and rank these pieces of content, improving your SEO. They also help website visitors when an image doesn’t display properly on their screen or load quickly by providing a clue about what image they should be seeing. Last, and definitely not least, alt tags are easy for screen readers to decipher, so they help with web accessibility. Alt tags should be short and descriptive—think, “paddle board on lake with smiling boy” or “chocolate cake with vanilla frosting and strawberry.”
  • Optimize for mobile. Google prioritizes mobile websites, so making sure your website is mobile friendly is critical. This means providing a visually pleasing and easy-to-use experience no matter what device someone is visiting from. Mobile sites also must load quickly on a 3G connection, render properly on any sized screen, have well-spaced site elements that users can easily tap on to take action, and feature content that’s entirely visible without having to scroll left or right. Mailchimp websites are built with mobile in mind—the website builder allows you to preview your website on a mobile phone to see how it looks.
  • Enable fast load times. Ideally your pages should load in under 2 seconds—less than 3 is a must. If they do, it’ll improve your search rankings. There are several things that can slow down your load time, including issues with your content management system (CMS), poorly written code, low bandwidth that can’t handle your traffic volume, or numerous large images on a page. Use Google PageSpeed Insights to test how quickly your website is loading. Be sure you host your website on a platform that enables fast load times.
  • Install Google Search Console and Analytics. Google Search Console will help you see if Google is finding and indexing all of the pages on your website to highlight places you can improve performance. It can also help you set up your own site search tracking. You can connect to Google Analytics from your Mailchimp dashboard to monitor your traffic, see what pages are being visited the most, and what links direct visitors to your website. Here’s a guide to help you set up Google Analytics.
  • Make sure your website and URL are secure. Google considers HTTPS encryption a top priority, and will show a security warning in search results if a website is not HTTPs encrypted. Work with a website builder that makes security a priority. All websites created with Mailchimp include an SSL certificate—this encrypts data and guarantees the authenticity of a website to visitors.
