But first, you need to get listed on Google Maps and claim your listing, which we’ll be covering next.

  1. Add your business to Google Maps

Of course, you can’t rank higher or perform successful Google Maps marketing if you don’t have a Google Maps listing in the first place. If you already have one, skip this section. If you don’t have a listing or are not sure, follow the steps below to add your business to Google Maps:

  • Go to Google.com/maps or to the Google Maps app on your smartphone and search for your business name.
  • If it appears in the drop-down menu with a location next to it, then you have a listing! Skip to the next section.
  • If your business name doesn’t appear, you’ll see an option in the drop-down menu to “add a missing place.”

Something to note here is that anyone in the world can add a business to Google Maps. So, even if you yourself haven’t done so, it’s still best to check and make sure your business listing doesn’t already exist. And don’t worry: No matter who it is, the person who adds your business to Google Maps does not have control over that listing. Only the one who claims the listing by proving ownership of the business has that control, which is what we’ll get into next.

  1. Claim your Google Maps business listing

The second step in getting your business to rank higher on Google Maps is to claim your listing. This is because when you create your listing, all you are able to provide is the name, category, and location; but when you claim your listing, you can provide many more details about your business, and the more information a business listing contains, the higher it will rank on Google Maps. Plus, you can’t do any of the other steps in this guide if your listing is not claimed.

The prerequisite to claiming your business listing on Google Maps is having a free Google My Business account. If you have an account already, simply pull up your Google Maps business listing, select the option that says “Claim this business” or “Own this business?” and follow the prompts. If you don’t have a Google My Business account, head over to this post and we’ll walk you through creating an account and claiming your business with it.

  1. Add information to your Google Maps business listing

Alright, so now that you have a Google Maps business listing and a Google My Business account linked to it, you are armed and ready to optimize it for higher ranking in local search results. As I mentioned earlier, the more information your listing provides, the higher it will rank in results. To add more information to your listing, log in to your Google My Business account. Here you will see a dashboard with several tabs down the side.

Select the “Info” tab, which includes your name, category, address, service area (if applicable), hours, special hours, phone number, website, products, services, attributes, and description. Here are some tips for optimizing these Google My Business account sections for higher ranking on Google Maps:

  • Be consistent with name and address: Google Maps ranks businesses it can trust, and one measure of your trustworthiness is the consistency of information about your business across the web. For example, say you have a business called “North Shore Wellness Center.” Make sure your business name (creative business name ideas here!) in your Google My Business dashboard is exactly that and not a slight variation, such as N. Shore Wellness Center or North Shore Wellness Ctr. Also, make sure this name is identical across all of your other online properties—your website, Yelp listing, Facebook profile, and more. The same goes for address information (for example, using “St” vs Street”).
  • Use a local phone number: Google isn’t keen on toll-free (800 and 877) numbers because these types of numbers are frequently used for spam. Use a local telephone number with the area code of your location. This will help you to rank higher in Google Maps, and it will also verify for searchers that your business is located in that area.
  • Include your tracked and main number: If you use call tracking, use a tracked number for your primary business phone number and your main number as your secondary number. This will get most of your calls coming in through the tracked line so you can see the efficacy of your listing; but with the main number still in your listing, Google can then match your number with the one on your website and other listings.
  • Keep your hours updated: Google Maps business listings tell users if that business is open, closed, or opening or closing soon. (And during the pandemic, whether it’s temporarily closed—making it an important SEO tactic during COVID-19.) Keeping these hours updated signals to Google that you are active and, therefore, trustworthy, and this will help with your rank. It will also prevent customers from making the trip out to your store only to find that it’s closed or closing—which can sometimes spark a negative review (which hurts your ranking on Google Maps).
  • Write a business description: The description on your Google Maps business listing should provide the big picture of your business to help orient visitors; as well as unique attributes to compel searchers. It should also be written in a tone that aligns with your brand, to help establish a better connection. Be sure to include keywords in your business description, as this will help your business listing on Google Maps to rank not just for searches that contain your business name, but for searches for products and services as well.
  • Properly categorize your business: In terms of ranking, the category of your business as it appears on Google Maps is very important. For your primary category, choose the one that best represents the core offering of your business. If any other categories apply, choose them as secondary categories.
  1. Add photos to your Google Maps business listing

Google loves it when you upload photos to your listing. First, because it signals that you are an active listing worthy of ranking higher in results. Second, because Google’s photo-recognition technology is advancing and Google is starting to show images in local search results. And third, because the SEO rule of thumb is that Google loves what consumers love, and consumers love photos.

Google Maps business listings without photos are less appealing to consumers and may not rank as high as listings with photos.

So, to improve your Google Maps ranking, upload high-quality and compelling photos to your business listing that captures what it’s like to be at your business. You do this by going to the “Photos” tab in your Google My Business dashboard and click on the blue circle with a white plus sign. From there, you’ll be able to drag and drop several photos and/or videos at once. Ideally, you should strive to add at least one new photo a day.

  1. Get Google reviews

Knowing that Google loves what customers love, it should be no surprise that Google Maps gives ranking favor to business listings with positive reviews. So how do you get more Google reviews? Well, when you create a business listing on Google Maps, this automatically opens your business up to reviews.

But that doesn’t mean you’ll get them. You’ll need to be proactive in asking for reviews, and you’ll also need to respond to them. Responding to reviews encourages more of them and mitigates the damage of negative reviews. Plus, your responses show other prospects how attentive you are to customers and how well you resolve issues.

Reviews can be scary, but unless your service is truly atrocious, bad reviews tend to be few and far between. Plus, as long as you respond properly you can mitigate and even reverse the damage of a negative review.

If you’re trying to rank for local search, there’s no better way than to acquire citations (non-linked mentions of your business or brand name) and to get local links. Make sure to register your website with Google My Business and local reviews sites like Yelp and Yahoo Local. When you do a fantastic job of covering all angles of a topic, you naturally use semantically-related long tail phrases. For some extra help, you can also find long tail phrases using a tail like HitTail.

Write evergreen content that will serve as a resource. Consistently add content that will serve as a resource to your readers, to other bloggers and to journalists (these last two are key for getting links). How to posts, list posts, top resource lists and in-depth tutorials and guides are always good bets. If you have insider knowledge in your field, even better; this will make it more difficult for your competitors to replicate your content.

Perfect your own on-site SEO.

Make sure your site is optimized for mobile. With more Google searches now being done on mobile devices than desktop, you stand to lose a lot of business if your site isn’t mobile-optimized. Use Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test to find out whether your site is mobile-friendly, and to identify specific steps you can take to improve on your site’s mobile experience.

Optimize your on-page SEO. I’ve already alluded to this above, but the importance of your on-page SEO can’t be stressed enough. Use your keywords in strategic locations on your page. Most importantly, place valuable keywords in your title tag, URL, header tags (particularly your H1 tag), alt image tags and throughout your content.

Promote your site and content.

Guest post. Guest posting can be a great way to acquire high-quality links to your site. That said, it should never be done exclusively as a way to earn links. Guest blog on sites where your audience hangs out. This is a great way to get referral traffic to your site, and to build up your reputation online.

Share your content on social media. While we know that Google doesn’t consider social media likes, shares and retweets as ranking factors, the indirect benefits of social media are clear. The more your content is shared, the more people there are who see it. The more people who see the content, the more links you will naturally attract. Having a large, targeted audience that’s ready and waiting to see and share your content is invaluable; and if your competitors are focusing exclusively on SEO, this can give you a serious advantage.

Investigate how your competitors are using social media. Find out which social media platforms the competitor is using, and evaluate the media performance. Is this competitor noticeably absent on a platform where their (and your!) target market is known to hang out? You may have spent months or longer optimizing your website with great meta descriptions, informative content marketing, just to have your ranking suddenly dropped below your competitors.

Have you wondered what you have done to get this Google penalty on your website? There are many different factors that can cause a sudden ranking drop, from duplicated content that is not appropriately sourced, to mobile friendly designs that do not load properly across all devices affecting the user experience, and more.

Forbes outlines 10 of the main causes for a sudden drop in your online ranking:

  • 1. You’re tracking the wrong rankings. In recent years there has been a shift toward “natural language” when it comes to searches, that is, people typing, or increasingly speaking, complete sentences into search engines, rather than just a few keywords. If you’re only tracking generic keywords, it might be that your keyword strategy is outdated. The people who are looking for you are using new keywords or phrases, and you need to update your keyword strategy.
  • 2. The Google “dance”. It’s normal for rankings to fluctuate. Not just from one day to the next, but from one computer to another, one location to another, and based on a host of other variables. Google is constantly testing every variable it can detect by changing search results. This is part of why it’s counter productive to focus too heavily on specific rankings. Your SEO firm may give you a ranking report, but if you check the rankings on your own computer they may be different, simply because the report was run from a different computer. Or because the rankings have changed since yesterday. Generally rankings that aren’t subject to other forces on this list won’t vary too much, but the Google dance might be the only logical explanation for small drops in rankings.
  • 3. New website. If you launch a new design for an existing website you can expect your rankings to drop, regardless of what you do to prepare for that launch, and regardless of how much better the new website is, in terms of SEO, than the old one. To minimize the drop in rankings make sure a proper 301 redirect plan is in place. I know of at least one company that went out of business because of that single mistake. Make sure the new website is well optimized prior to launching it. But be prepared for the rankings to drop, at least temporarily. Generally the rankings will recover within 1-2 months, if not quite a bit faster.
  • 4. New website no longer. You launched a redesigned website to replace an old one and the rankings went down, then came back up quickly, even higher than they were before, and now they’ve gone back down slightly. Or you launched a brand new website, and after a few weeks your website shot to the top of the rankings, and then dropped back down–a lot. This is also a common occurrence. The key is to be patient, and invest in best practices SEO. Long term rankings require long term work.
  • 5. Low quality links. Many companies made the mistake a few years ago of succumbing to an offer of thousands of links for a low price. Now, with various updates made by the search engines to stop what they see as “search engine spamming,” websites with large quantities of low quality links pointing to them are seeing their rankings drop or disappear entirely. Google says if your site is being harmed by links you don’t directly control, “You should…make every effort to clean up unnatural links pointing to your site.” As a matter of last resort, you can disavow those links.
  • 6. Losing good links. A drop in rankings might be due to losing high quality links. Perhaps those websites or webpages disappeared, or the link to your website was removed. Whatever the cause, the solution is to continually be building high quality links. And when I say “building,” I mean attracting, because the best links come naturally. How do you attract high quality links? By creating amazing content, or merely helpful content, that people find interesting enough to share.
  • 7. Bad hosting. Switch to a low quality hosting company, or a company whose data center isn’t in the ideal place to provide fast page loads for your site visitors, and you can end up with user behavior on your site that tells search engines they should rank other websites before yours. The solution is to make sure the majority of your website visitors have a fast, snappy experience on your website by hosting the site in close proximity to your visitors, where possible, and paying enough to have your website on a server that isn’t bogged down with 5,000 other websites.
  • 8. Incorrect robots.txt file. Several years ago I made a mistake in the robots.txt file of a blog I owned and managed. In effect, I told the search engines to ignore my website and not let anyone find it. Whoops. My traffic dried up almost entirely. The good news is that once I noticed the problem and fixed my mistake, the rankings came back within a few days, a few weeks in some cases. Make sure you employ best practices for your robots.txt file, and don’t make typos.
  • 9. Competitors. Search engine rankings are a zero sum game. For any given keyword if one website’s ranking improves, at least one other website’s ranking must go down. This is part of why SEO services are ongoing, rather than provided just once. Your website is never fully optimized, because your competitors are constantly improving their websites. It’s an eternal game of king of the mountain, and the only way to stay on top is continual effort.
  • 10. Google update. Thousands of PhDs are employed at Google working to improve their search algorithm. The algorithm is updated hundreds of times each year, with some of those updates being large and disruptive, while most are minor in impact. The larger updates usually receive some sort of animal-themed name, such as Penguin, Panda, or Hummingbird. The point is, when Google makes an update, it changes rankings negatively for the websites that aren’t in compliance. To avoid death by Google update, follow the Google Webmaster Guidelines as best practices, and engage only in white hat SEO tactics. This is the path to rankings that will generate traffic now as well as three years from now.
